Describing Learners

 Hello :)

I am so nervous because this is the last topic before our midterm, I know midterms are scary but I hope we all get good grades.

So let's learn about Describing Learners, as teacher Orlando explain to us, there are 3 types of learners which are children, adolescents, and adults and to describe our learners, we should consider the following aspects:

Age

Learner Differences

Language Levels

Their Motivation

Background*

let's begin by explaining a little bit about the age (young children)

They respond to meaning even if they do not understand individual words.
They often learn indirectly rather than directly.
Their understanding comes from what they see, hear, and – crucially – from what they have the chance to touch and interact with.
They find grammar concepts difficult to grasp.
They generally display enthusiasm.
They have a need for individual attention and approval from the teacher.
They are keen to talk about themselves.
They have a limited attention span, losing interest after ten minutes or so.

Adolescents

They are usually regarded as problematic students; however, when they find the purpose of the activity, they usually do it successfully.
They are usually committed and passionate when they like what they are being taught.
They are in a constant search of identity and self-esteem.
They need approval, but most of the time, from their peers.
If they have good rapport with their teacher, they can be their teacher’s best “defenders” or “advocates”.
When feeling comfortable, they are keen to talk about their experiences.

Adults

They can engage with abstract thought.
They have a whole range of life experiences to draw on.
They have expectations about their learning process.
They tend to be more disciplined.
Teachers can use adults’ experiences to create a wide array of activities.
They have a particular understanding of what they are learning.

Some learner Differences
Multiple Intelligences
Learning Styles (VARK – KOLB)
Characteristics of good learners

Motivation
Intrinsic – from within
Extrinsic – from external factors
Some factors that elicit motivation:
*The goal
*The society we live in
*The people around us
*Curiosity

If in the future we decide to be teachers we must keep in mind that people of different ages have different needs, competencies, and cognitive skills, so not everyone learns in the same way.

So now we are going to be able to identify and describe the different learners

Thank you for reading, if you have questions about this topic let me know in the comment section

With love, Kat
