THE AUDIOLINGUAL METHOD

 Hello :)

Welcome to my new entry where I am going to explain the AUDIOLINGUAL METHOD, this is the third method that we have been studying in our didactic class.

Its also known as the ARMY METHOD and originated during World War II when the armies needed to become orally proficient in the language of their allies and enemies. It's the first method based on linguistic theory and behavioral psychology.

It emphasizes de teaching of listening and speaking before reading and writing and this method uses dialogues as the main form of language presentation and drills as the main training techniques. Also, it is based on Skinner's behaviorism theory, a human being can be trained using a system of reinforcement where the correct behavior receives positive feedback and errors receives negative ones.

Some techniques that can be applied with the Audio-Lingual method are:

Repetition drill
This drill is often used to teach the lines of the dialogue. Students are asked to repeat the teacher’s model as accurately and as quickly as possible.

Substitution drill:
The students repeat the line from the dialogue which the teacher has given them, substituting the cue for the line in its proper place.

Question-and-answer drill:
The drill gives students practice with answering questions. The students should answer the teacher’s questions very quickly. It is also possible for the teacher to cue the students to ask questions as well.

Transformation Drills:
Students change sentences from affirmative to negative.

In conclusion, The Audio-Lingual Method aims to develop the communicative competence of students using dialogues and drills. The use of dialogues and drills is effective in foreign language teaching as they lead the students to produce speech. Repetition of the dialogues and the drills will enable students to respond quickly and accurately in spoken language.

Thank you for your support in reading my blog, If you have questions about this method please add them in the comments.
