TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR)

 Greetings :)

This week, we are going to learn about the TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR) METHOD

It refers to a method of teaching language through physical activity. And it is based on the teaching of its creator, James Asher, the more often a memory connection is traced, the stronger the memory association and the more likely it will be remembered.

The main principles that we learned about this method are the following:

  • Meaning in the target language can often be conveyed through actions.
  • Students can initially learn one part of the language rapidly by moving their bodies.
  • The student’s understanding of the target language should be developed before speaking.
  • Students will begin to speak when they are ready.
  • Students are expected to make errors when they first begin speaking
  • It is very important that students feel successful.

Some advantages:

It is a fun method especially for children, making them have a good time.
It does not require a great deal of preparation on the part of the teacher.
It is a good tool for learning vocabulary.

Some disadvantages:

It is limited since everything can't be explained with this method.
It can be a challenge for shy students.
If this method is widely used, it can cause displeasure in students.

Main purpose:

Is to learn some new vocabulary, first we are going from basic and simple vocabulary to a more specific one

To sum up, the TPR  is a language learning method that makes use of body movements with the acquisition of a new language.

This was one of my favorite classes, we did a lot of activities, and one was to sing a song, while we move our bodies and did what the song ask for, for example: clapping our hands, jumping, etc

If you have any questions or comments about this method, please add them in the comments.

See you next time

With love, Kat
