THE GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD
Welcome Everyone :)
Let’s learn about the Grammar Translation
Method
I will explain to you all the first topic of the subject which is TGTM but first, let’s define what is The Grammar Translation Method: it refers to a method of teaching foreign languages derived from the classical method of teaching Greek and Latin.
Two main goals:
To enable students to read and translate literature written in the target language.
To further students’ general intellectual development.
Characteristics of the Method:
Classes are taught in the mother tongue.
Much vocabulary is taught in the form of lists of isolated words.
Little or no attention is given to pronunciation.
Reading of difficult texts is begun early.
Long, elaborate explanations of the intricacies of grammar are given.
Now, I will mention some reasons why we should use this method, first, because helps us with our writing skills, its focuses on grammar and correct sentence structure. Tests of grammar rules and translations are easy to construct, and students are translating the text into another language directly. Another interesting thing about this method is that if a teacher is not fluent in English, but he/she is fluent in another language still can teach because the emphasis is not on the spoken words but on translations.
Our teacher at the end of the class always does a fun dynamic that is to analyze the topic of the class with the SWOT method, if you do not have an idea what is this method don’t worry, I will explain it to you.
So now I will mention some strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of this method so we can have a better
understanding of the topic.
Strengths
Students learn a lot of vocabulary.
Reading and writing skills are excelled.
It activates students´ memory.
Weaknesses
Poor listening and speaking.
Unnatural and Inaccurate Pronunciation.
GTM is not interactive and engaging for
students.
Opportunities
It gives the chance of learning a new language using textbooks.
Students can learn vocabulary not only in the target language but also
in their mother tongue.
Threats
Classes may turn boring.
More STT (student talking time)
Students might not be accustomed to translating word by word.
To conclude with this method we can
mention that The Grammar Translation Method is a way of teaching a foreign
language where students learn grammatical rules to apply them in translations
between a target/native language and something the student needs to do a
complete translation of a text word for word.
I really enjoyed learning about this
method, not my favorite method yet. I am excited about the new methods that we
are going to learn so at the end I will be able to tell you my favorite one. So
stay tuned.
If you have questions about this method,
please add your doubts in the comments and I will be more than happy to help
you out.
I appreciate the time you are taking to
read my blog.
See you next time.
with love, Kate
